Eat Yo’ Beats: Ana Tijoux & The Political Power of Self-Examination
Ana Tijoux was born Anamaría Merino in 1977 in Paris, because her Chilean father and French mother were in exile from Pinochet’s brutal military dictatorship. When her mother’s job as a social worker put her in touch with hip-hop as an 8-year old, it was love. At 14, Ana and her family returned to Chile [...]

Shake That Booty Politic: Das Racist’s Union of High and Low Culture
The new year is here, and with it, new questions. The New York Times wondered what it would mean if we aren’t calculating horoscopes correctly; Information is Beautiful explored what it would mean if we were; McSweeney’s Internet Tendency asked why comic sans can’t get any respect. I wonder what it would be like to [...]

Packin' Heat Like the Oven Door & Letting Jay-Z Take Over
Whelp, I’m trying to write my thesis. So I’m turning it over to Jay-Z, sampling some classic Bobby Brown: “Yung’uns ice-grilling me, oh – you’re not feeling me? Fine; it costs you nothing to pay me no mind Look, I’m on my grind cousin, ain’t got time for fronting Sensitive thugs, you all need hugs [...]

We're Back….Because Professor P is a Baller
Thanks for waiting out that unfortunate change of template. It turns out that the combination of the Tina Fey and Sarah Silverman videos had overloaded things. However, thanks to Professor P’s amazing skillz, (check her out here) we’re back up and running. This song (after the jump) is a partial expression of my gratitude.

There Is Not a Black America, or a White America… There's the United States of America
Here’s MC Eazeyo, who is a Friend, telling those of us who support Obama why we should be getting down to the voting booths, in addition to the fat beats by Rjd2 that back this track.

There Ain't No Partay Like My Nana's Tea Partay
I’ve just been given a gift of amazingly goofy and somewhat feminist hip hop. This reminds me of my amazingly talented brother. I’d like to share it with you.

Tonight, It's All About the Ladies . . .
Sorry ’bout the late notice. But if you’re in the Western Massachusetts area today, consider your plans for this evening. If they’re not going to include the verbal stylings of MCs Tye Pheonix, Latia Larock and Apani B Fly, or the mixing of DJs Nomadik (formerly of WERS’ Hip Hop show on Tuesday nights) and [...]
