Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me: The Pipettes Rock
Three hipsters, with bangs and a penchant for polka dots, are bringing feminism back to the dance floor, where it hasn’t been since Salt ‘N’ Pepa’s “None of Your Biznass” (No, the Spice Girls are not real girlpower: I mean, please, “if you want to get with me, you’ve gotta get with my friends”?). The [...]

Bolivia and Women as Vessels of Cultural Authenticity
Tonight, my flight leaves for Bolivia at 8:30. I´m excited for the visit because my money will go farther there, and because it will be the first country that I´ve ever been to which has a thriving indigenous culture. It´s a culture that I don´t know much about, so I´ve been trying to do some [...]

The Writing on the Wall: Fafi
When Fafi was eighteen, she started sneaking out of her parents’ home to make public art. Her work, which is cartoonish, features what her myspace page calls “powerful and active” images of girls. Fafi, now thirty-one, lives in France with her husband and children and travels the world to install her rogue pieces, which she [...]

Rape, Love vs. Sex, and Using Nuns to Sell Beer as Medicine
1) Painful Truth: Rape Theory: Ann K. Ream wrote this article in the Chicago Tribune about the application of the sexual double standard to the Duke rape case. Semantics: A Nebraska Judge bans the word ‘rape’ from his courtroom — oh, it’s that easy to make it go away? Consequences: Oh, and someone start shopping [...]

Skin Deep: More Billboard Repair
Ah, and thanks to Feministing for returning to the old theme of billboards, check out this article from the Chicago Tribune on a community that successfully removed a billboard, hosted by Clear Channel, which depicted a model with highlighted “problem areas” and helpfully suggested solutions, like “botox.” The image above is from Guerrilla Girls.

Apologetics: Excuse me, I’m not sorry!
Hat tip to Thinking Girl for leading me to A Cat And Twenty‘s thought-provoking article on the overused apology. Kate D. of ACAT cites example after example of women who were victimized and then apologized. Why do women apologize so much? I’m sorry, I have no idea, so I went to Wikipedia, so I could [...]
