ObjectifyThis is a blog about the objectification of people, mostly women, in the media. I want to think about why women are characterized as objects while men are allowed to be subjects — is it the autohomophobia of the male gaze? Is it a fear or noncomprehension of female sexual desire?
These questions are important because the media and popular culture set the tone for the United States and serve as our only measure of what our country thinks is funny, or sexy, or too risque.
In this blog I will construct a virtual collage of examples of objectification in the media, and compare the way that different kinds of people are represented, with a focus on gender.
